Aguas Verdes is literally “at the end of the world”.
Beyond Llanos de la Conception, a narrow road leads along a dry barranco to a couple of weekend houses and the holiday club on the west coast. There are no restaurants, no shops, no nightlife here. Nothing but endless distance and solitude, unspoilt nature, steep cliffs in the waves of the Atlantic, gentle or violent depending on the weather. As impressive a sight as ever: the remains of the wreck of the JUCAR, booming hollowly as the waves hit it.
A holiday here is not everybody’s cup of tea. Only incorrigible romantics and individualists need apply. The holiday club has existed since 1980. It is a closed system, with its own electricity generator and its own water supplies from a well and environmentally friendly sewage disposal.
The water is said to have healing powers, and real tranquillity, even solitude, do their bit to attract the kind of holiday-makers who want to spend several weeks experiencing “pure Fuerteventura”, to leave the world behind and find themselves.
