Once an isolated fishing village accessible only by rough tracks, over th
e last few decades Morro Jable has grown into one of the largest holiday centres on Fuerteventura. This is not surprising, as this part of the island has something for everyone. By the sea, the wide, light-coloured beaches of Butohondo are the attraction; on the promenade, in the hotels and centros comerciales, numerous restaurants, bars and shops await their customers; and inland, towards the mountains, begins the wild and untouched countryside of northern Jandía, challenging visitors to walk and climb.
The old village lays in
a sheltered position on slopes of the Barancode las Damas (Cantil), while the holiday facilities - from exclusive hotels to accommodation for mass tourism - spread out at the eastern end. The harbour is in the west, and is used by fishermen and yachtsmen alike.
Above the harbour, the unmade runs to Punta Jandía, the westernmost tip of Fuerteventura, and to Cofete. The slim white lighthouse on the Punta del Matorral marks the southernmost point of the island for shipping.
