The village lies at the foot of the 401 m mountain of the same name. BecaTindaya - Fuerteventurause of its particularly hard rock, the mountain defies erosion, and in clear weather you can see Teide, the highest mountain on Tenerife, from its peak. It has been a natural protection zone since 1987. The old inhabitants of Fuerteventura revered Tindaya as a religious place. This can be seen in the more than a hTindaya - Fuerteventuraundred outlines of feet carved in the smooth rock to keep away bad spirits, invoke fertility, enter into “marriage” or cement fellowship. In view of the fact that Teide, with its repeated eruptions, was seen as the residence of the fearful devil, it is not surprising that all the rock carvings on Tindaya face in this direction. The climb up the mountain is rewarded by a wonderful view, but is not for people with vertigo. To the left of the disused quarry a narrow path leads along the ridge to the peak. ZIn the village, Tindaya - Fuerteventuraold and new confront each

other: tomato plantations, the football stadium, the lucha canaria arena, the commercial centre - and the surprisingly richly furnished little church of the Virgen de la Caridad, with a baroque altar that includes two oil-paintings and a sculpture of the saint. In the three bars, you will meet almost only locals; and the prices are accordingly low. The narrow tarmac road ends in the abandoned ruins of two unfinished holiday complexes.
